Course description
General information
The Vocational Access Course provides the opportunity for students to develop practical skills in their chosen vocational field, improve/maintain their basic skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT, and develop their personal and social skills for progression to vocational or employment preparation courses. Vocational areas include Catering, Horticulture, Construction, Hair and Beauty. Where appropriate, students will have the opportunity to study for examination accreditation in: Edexcel Skills For Working Life - Practical Skills, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Land Based, Asdan FE Level Up Award, City & Guilds Literacy and Numeracy accreditation. It is particularly suitable for those who may have mild to moderate learning difficulties.
Course content
The course programme will include:
* ICT
* Art appreciation
* Art
* Media
* Preparation for Employment
* Embedded Literacy and Numeracy
Plus two of the following:
* Carpentry
* Hair and Beauty
* Horticulture
* Catering
All practical subjects are delivered in realistic working environments. Every student will follow a Social Development programme through ASDAN Award Scheme FE Level Up Award.
Teaching and assessment
Assessment is continuous, mainly by observation of practical assignments in all subjects, or through simulated work projects. Those students entered for the Skills for Working Life programme will complete three externally set assignments. All students will receive recognition of their achievements at the end of the course.
Students learn through working in practical environments in the kitchen, garden and polytunnel, construction workshop or in the hair and beauty salons. Students will also develop literacy and numeracy skills through practical and theory lessons. ICT is delivered separately but is also embedded into many of the other subject areas. Media is delivered in the media studio, and Art in the designated Art room. Both subjects are practically based.
Progression
Students will have the opportunity to progress onto either FE vocational courses at the college, the Work Preparation Course, which is a preparation for employment course, or on to training programmes.
