Svenska – Facts about the Swedish language
Swedish is the official language of Sweden and together with Finnish an official language of Finland and is spoken by more than 9 million Swedish speakers. In addition to Sweden, communities of Swedish speakers can be found in the south-western coastal areas of Finland.
Swedish is classified as a North Germanic language of the Indo-European family of languages. Its closest relations are Danish and Norwegian where there is some mutual intelligibility between the languages.
Linguists have determined that there are hundreds of Swedish dialects. However, six major groups can be identified and are categorised according to location: Norrland, Svealand, Gotland, Åland and mainland Finland, western and northern Götaland and southernmost Sweden. Standard Swedish evolved from the dialects from the region surrounding the capital city of Stockholm.
Swedish is written using the Latin alphabet, with the addition of 3 letters: å, ä, and ö.
