Course description
In the world today an awareness and understanding of sustainability and sustainable development is becoming increasingly important. This is recognised by the United Nations who have designated 2005-2014 the 'Decade of Education for Sustainable Development'.
The concept of sustainability underpins much environmental, social and economic activity across a broad range of stakeholders, including the work of governments, business, industry, nongovernmental organisations, charities and pressure groups. The importance of sustainability is recognised at local, national and international levels. There is increasing need for professionals in a broad range of commercial and non-commercial enterprises who can engage with the sustainability agenda.
The programme is constructed to allow the development of skills to help students prepare either for employment or further study for higher degrees. It combines vocational training and theoretical understanding and have strong links with local industries.
The degree provides a modern, contemporary training in sustainability issues that can be put to use professionally in environmental consultancies, planning, regeneration, business as well as various management careers. Fieldtrips form an important component of the study experience with residential trips to the New Forest, the Lake District and Southern Spain. Students spend half of the final year involved in independent research working on a one to one basis with a member of staff.
