    This section explains the burning and detonation process in propellants and explosives.  It is divided into four topics.  First we look at the classification of explosives and explain some of the terms used in the section.  Then we move on to discuss the burning process in propellants and explosives.  The third topic looks at the detonation process and finally in the fourth topic we look at the relationship between the velocity of detonation and a number of other parameters.

    By the end of this section you will be able to

        * explain the classification of explosives
        * describe the burning process
        * describe the detonation process
        * describe the outcomes of a detonation
        * identify the differences between burning and detonation of propellants and explosives

    Course length

    Students who enrol on this section have 4 weeks in which to complete it (the actual time it takes to work through the section is about an hour if you have the necessary technical/chemical knowledge)
