Course description
The Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in International Business was the first of its kind in Ireland and was developed to address the rapidly expanding field of international business. The course aims to allow students to acquire mastery of both the macro and micro contexts of international business, and is designed to enable students to acquire, develop, and integrate international business theory, and develop the skills to then apply this in terms of international business practice. The Masters dissertation provides the opportunity to conceive, design and implement satisfactorily a substantial research project within the broad subject area of international business.
The course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis at the Magee campus, and as such it attracts a variety of students with different educational needs: business studies graduates wishing to pursue a career in international business, mature students wishing to improve career options and develop expertise, and business practitioners wishing to acquire the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to enable them to compete in a rapidly developing and constantly evolving global business environment. In recent years the course has also attracted growing numbers of EU and international students keen to pursue careers in this field. The Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in International Business benefits from its close links with the International Business Centre, based in the School of International Business at the Magee campus.
An indicator of the success of the course is the employment record of graduates. A large majority of graduates have successfully gained employment immediately on completion of the course, both locally and further afield. Employees include the European Commission, Brussels; the International Business Centre, Londonderry; Derry City Council; Invest NI; International Office; Derry Journal; Donegal County Council; Exploris and Business in the Community. The following testimonial from Declan O'Hare, North West Development Office in the Department of Social Services, Londonderry, underlines the value of the course in terms of both personal and professional development:
"An immensely rewarding experience - from both a personal and career perspective. Involving an innovative and imaginative research-based approach to the study of international business/management and culture, combined with the opportunity for integrated study with students at the University of George Washington, this is a must for anyone engaged in global business.
