Course description
This programme is offered jointly by the School of Art and Design and the Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages (AICH). Irish Studies which is popular in Ireland and abroad almost exclusively means the study of aspects of Irish literature, history, geography, music, drama, folklore et al. It seldom includes the study of the visual arts (modern & contemporary periods). This course is unique as it is designed to meet this educational gap in provision and reflect the new confidence of the Visual Arts in Ireland (it is not replicated anywhere else in Ireland or abroad).
The programme focuses on the Visual Arts in Ireland in the twentieth century, including study of fine art, material culture, design and their mediation (Museum Studies). It will frame such studies within the wider historical and cultural context of Ireland (Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland).
