Objectives
You'll extend your skills in examination, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The course incorporates applied theoretical concepts of anatomy and pathology, diagnostic techniques and treatment interventions. Theoretical learning is combined with experiential learning in a practical workshop format so you're prepared to use your new skills in clinical practice.

Entry requirements
Applicants should normally:
-have an honours degree (minimum 2.2 class) in a health-related subject
be a registered healthcare professional with a working knowledge and clinical experience of joint and soft tissue assessment
-have evidence of prior learning of detailed surface anatomy and pathology of musculoskeletal conditions
-have post-registration experience and be working in musculoskeletal practice while enrolled on the course.
Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be considered if they can provide evidence of their ability to study at master's level and their previous qualifications are considered commensurate with the full CAMS Level 3 criteria.

Course description
PgCert Musculoskeletal Studies
This course is a collaborative venture between the University of Teesside and the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine. It's targeted primarily at medical practitioners and chartered physiotherapists who wish to develop their skills in the clinical management of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The course is endorsed by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
You will study the following modules:
Clinical Management of Cervical and Upper Spine Conditions
This module integrates a systematic Orthopaedic Medicine approach to managing neck pain syndromes and upper limb problems. Practical workshops combine theoretical and experiential learning to prepare you to incorporate new skills into your clinical practice.
Clinical Management of Lumbar Spine and Lower Limb Conditions
This module integrates a systematic Orthopaedic Medicine approach to managing lumbar spine pain syndromes and lower limb problems through clinical reasoning and reflecting on practice. Practical workshops combine theoretical and experiential learning, incorporating your new clinical practice skills.
Clinical Management of Sacro-iliac and Thoracic Spine Conditions
This module integrates a systematic Orthopaedic Medicine approach to managing sacro-iliac and thoracic spine pain syndromes. It introduces advanced techniques for the lumbar and cervical spine and less common neuromusculoskeletal problems.
Course structure
Modules cover: Clinical Management of Cervical Spine and Upper Limb Conditions, Clinical Management of Lumbar Spine and Lower Limb Conditions, and Clinical Management of Sacro-iliac and Thoracic Spine Conditions. Academic credit is gained by completing a 4,000-word case study assignment.
Professional accreditation
You'll be eligibile to apply for membership of the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine (currently only open to medical practitioners and physiotherapists).
