Course description
Introduction
TThis course is designed to enable you to gain Qualified Teacher Status to teach music to 11-18-year-olds in line with Department of Education and Skills standards and ensures you have sufficient knowledge and expertise to teach pupils of all abilities.
You learn how to teach music in secondary schools in terms of the best models of practice and the requirements of the National Curriculum. The curriculum elements of performing and composing, listening and appraising are at the heart of the course. There is an emphasis on practical engagement with the curriculum backed up by theoretical understanding.
In addition you will study music technology, particularly sequencing and sound recording, how to teach different types of world music, and important contemporary issues in music education. You will study current educational developments and maintain close contact with schools throughout
Teaching and Assessment
Continuous assessment is via coursework, periodic reports, subject assignments, ICT portfolio and by producing evidence to support the completion of all the Qualifying to Teach standards.
School Placements
The course features extensive school placements within the region. We arrange two secondary school placements with visits to linked primary schools during the course. Placements provide an opportunity to become involved with various aspects of school life, whether pastoral, social or academic.
Career Opportunities
Many students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all subject areas offered under the PGCE according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
