Course description
Students on the MSc in Transportation Planning and Engineering will gain a sound knowledge of the theory and concepts involved in transportation planning and engineering.
They benefit from the expertise available within our 25-strong Transportation Research Group, as well as from some 20 Transport professionals from external organisations who contribute to the programme. Our MSc Transport is taught at Southampton and also at our partner Institution in China, Beijing Jiaotong University.
The MSc in Transportation Planning and Engineering is recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Logistics and Transport.
The Transport MSc course offers excellent career prospects, particularly in transport consultancies, public authorities and a range of other transport organisations.
The planning and engineering of effective transportation systems continues to present exciting challenges, both in developed and developing countries. Issues include:
-The widespread use of private cars
-The effects of transport on all aspects of the environment
-Congestion on roads
-New towns and industrial estates: Old towns and urban renewal
-The economics of transport
-The movement of freight
-The difficulties of public transport
-The potential of new systems and operations on transport
-National and international interaction
These issues have led to an increasing demand for transportation professionals across the world. In the UK, the recent Government White Paper on Transport and the ‘Ten Year Plan’ have generated new and exciting initiatives as well as an unprecedented demand for highly qualified staff. Our MSc in Transport, which has been running since 1969, is designed to help meet this demand.
