Objectives
Modern transport and its development is the key to economic and social well-being of communities around the world. It enables movement of people and goods, and defines a number of industrial, commercial and personal activities that support economic and social prosperity
The scale of transport has continued to grow over the last century resulting in a number of unfavourable consequences, such as high congestion, negative environmental impact and safety and security concerns. This is a crucial time for understanding the transport and environment with the gathering pace of global climate change, the developing sustainability debate and the impact of particular environmental crises like building new roads and pollution events. There is a sharply increasing demand on organisations/bodies that have responsibilities for the mobility of goods and people to consider sustainable transportation
In order to help meet these requirements, the MSc in Transport and Environmental Management will produce graduates who will be highly suited to working with public and private sector bodies to meet the challenges of climate change and sustainable development
The course has a strong emphasis on the international nature of environmental, sustainable development and climate change issues of transportation. It explores various social, economic and cultural contexts within which transportation and environmental management systems must operate
With its emphasis on hands-on experience and fieldwork, this specialist programme trains you in such areas as environmental audit, impact assessment, planning and the management of particular environments related to transportation
As a consequence of undertaking the course, international students will naturally develop their knowledge of best practice surrounding important international transport projects
You will be encouraged to develop and deepen your knowledge, and further your intellectual development as you progress through the programme, whilst at the same time gaining new competencies and transferable skills. Some modules include site visits and fieldwork, which provide direct experience of the more practical and current issues in environmental assessment and management
Practical skills, and the chance to gain them, are integral to this course. It is expected that postgraduate dissertations will involve projects that will be carried out in collaboration with public or private organisations, and will enable you to apply your knowledge to real-life problems
The focus could also be on methods and research so that candidates wishing to pursue a PhD study will be prepared for this. In some cases, this can lead to publication in journals and attendance/presentation at international conferences
You will become a member and part of the University-hosted Midlands Institute of Transport, and will be expected to seek appropriate industrial and public sector projects managed by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence
The course’s flexibility means you can study at a level and rate to suite your individual career development needs, as well as those of your organisation/employer. It is possible to obtain the Masters with only one afternoon and evening study each week over 18 months (subject to availability of study module)
