Course description
Sustainable Building Technology (collaborative) (MSc)
Duration: 2 years full-time
Course Content
Core modules provide an introduction to systems able to tap natural energy sources and also cover sustainable technologies and their potential for incorporation in the design and fabric of buildings.
Architectural students will have the opportunity to explore integration of sustainable technologies in design-oriented projects, while engineering students will pursue more technical-based projects.
You will be required to study the following core modules over the autumn and spring semesters – unless otherwise stated modules are compulsory for all students:
-Energy Efficient Systems (compulsory for non-architects)
-Advanced Environmental Design
-Building Design for Different Climates (compulsory for architects)
-Renewable Energy Technology 1 & 2
-Ventilation in Architecture and Planning
-Energy Conversion and Utilisation
-Renewable Research Project
-Solar Architecture for Different Regions (compulsory for architects)
-Modelling and CFD (compulsory for non-architects
In addition, the following optional modules are offered as part of this course:
-Cooling Technologies & Applications
-Advanced Topics of Heat Transfer
-Air Conditioning Technologies
-Combined Heat & Power Systems
Please note that all module details are subject to change.
Finally, you will complete a 60-credit dissertation over a period of one year at the Partner Institution through which you applied to the course.
You will be expected to follow the rules and regulations for distance learning set down by the University of Nottingham.
Two different theses will be produced – one for the University of Nottingham MSc in Sustainable Building Technology and one for the MSc awarded by the relevant Partner Institution.
Course Structure
The MSc in Sustainable Building Technology (collaborative) starts in the September of each year and is for a nominal two-year duration operating in full-time mode.
You will spend the first eight months of the course at the University of Nottingham, during which time you will take a series of taught modules. You will then spend four months at the partner institution at which you are a registered student.
Your second year will involve the production of a dissertation based on a selected research project; this will take place at the Partner Institution at which you are based.
To be allowed to register for a dissertation, you must achieve an average mark of 50% or above in both the autumn and spring semesters.
As a result, dual degrees will be awarded to graduates. Both the University of Nottingham and Partner will award MSc degrees to the students who have successfully completed the programme requirements.
