Course description
This course is one of 11 themes within the Faculty of Engineering's multidisciplinary Postgraduate Training Package in Sustainable Engineering. The course allows students to come into contact with those in other engineering courses and thus develop multidisciplinary interests and skills.
Engineering design focuses on the process of designing a product. The generic modules provide a "product-centred" emphasis on the design activity, while specialist modules further emphasise the function of engineering design within the business environment (design methods and techniques, knowledge engineering, manufacturing and risk management).
The course gives graduates a thorough grounding in the use of product design methods and techniques. Graduates with an understanding of engineering design can help companies produce products with improved functionality, performance, quality and ease of manufacture at lower cost.
Engineering design is relevant to all types of product development organisations, including small- medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), design consultancies and large manufacturing organisations. It enhances the professional and creative abilities of graduates from a variety of 'design-centred' disciplines, from mechanical, mechatronic and electrical functions to IT.
