-Occupational Health and Safety -Occupational Health -Occupational Safety -Occupational Hygiene These part- or full-time, modular programmes are designed for postgraduate practitioners in contemporary occupational health, safety and hygiene practice who wish to explore the interaction between theory and practice in relation to the principles of occupational health and safety. The programmes aim to fully equip the professional in the related fields of occupational health practice to understand and solve a wide range of occupational health problems and issues, and to critically evaluate and initiate relevant research. The teaching staff comprises both University lecturers and speakers from commercial and public sector organisations who provide a balance of current theory and practice. The programmes consist of a multidisciplinary Foundation module together with a range of specific pathways and optional modules. The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) accredit the programmes. Professional recognition, in addition to the academic award, may be achieved by following a specific professional pathway validated by the relevant professional body. The programmes are based on a series of intensive, self-standing modules which equate to 150 hours of study. Students must successfully complete eight modules to satisfy the requirement of the Postgraduate Diploma. Those wishing to achieve a Master of Science degree must, in addition, undertake and submit a research project. This is a supervised project, which may take place at the student's place of employment or at the University.

Module 1: Foundation in Occupational Health and Safety
This module develops an understanding of the need for a research-minded approach to practice and introduces the use and interpretation of statistics and research methodology.
Module 2: Occupational Health and Safety Law
This module provides an understanding of the judicial system and basic legal concepts.
Module 3: OH in Contemporary Society
This module develops a research approach to practice and encourages reflection on the practice of OH.
Module 4: The Work Environment and its Effects on Health
This module provides an understanding of the theories and practical issues relating to the interdisciplinary nature of man's interactions with his environment.
Module 5: Assessment and Control of Chemical Hazards
This module provides an introduction to occupational hygiene based on chemical, biological and allergenic hazards in the working environment.
Module 6: Assessment and Control of Physical Hazards
This module provides an overview of the health effects of physical aspects of the work environment.
Module 7: Ergonomics
This module provides a thorough introduction to the subject of ergonomics and considers the philosophies which underpin this speciality.
Module 8: Risk Management
This module provides an understanding of the principles of risk management and evaluation of risk, and covers hazard identification, assessment and the control of risk in the workplace.
Module 9: Physical Environment
This module focuses on practical applications, the legislation relating to the physical environment and how to achieve compliance.
Module 10: Workplace and Work Equipment Safety
This module is intended to provide knowledge and understanding of the risks and control measures associated with work equipment, the workplace and associated factors.
Module 12: Health Surveillance and Promotion
This module is designed to provide a framework for students to critically explore and evaluate concepts and models of health promotion and surveillance in the workplace.
Module 13: Chemical Environment
This module provides a broad overview of process control and methods of environmental control, and deals with relevant aspects of toxicology.
Module 14: Environmental Risk Assessment and Control
This module provides an overview of the hazards to the environment from work activities and the toxic effects on people and the environment of common pollutants.
