    Programme

    All students wishing to take a taught mastersin History are initially admitted to the taught MSc in History. The MSc/Diploma by Research in History is available as generalist route which provides students with a mixture of core skills courses, a selection of course options drawn from the School's three 'Histories' (History, Economic and Social History and Scottish History), and a dissertation. It also gives students who have an interest in a particular area of History to transfer to one of a number of specialist exit route degree programmes. Those doing so take a minimum of 100 of a total 180 credits in that area of study, through a mixture of course options and a dissertation.

    The MSc/Diploma by Research in History provides students with structured research training while at the same time enabling them to pursue a research project which they design themselves, in consultation with supervisors. It serves as both a self contained research degree and a preparation for further study for the PhD degree.

    Learning Outcomes

    The programme enables its participants to:

        * develop a specific body of advanced knowledge;
        * become competent in advanced historical methodology and in the evaluation of evidence through the close study of relevant primary and secondary sources;
        * become familiar with historiographical debates and modes of historical explanation;
        * develop rigorous historical argument;
        * conceive and execute a coherent project in historical research and writing.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The programme consists of two compulsory training courses common to all History MSc degrees, two directed reading and research courses and a dissertation on a topic chosen by the student. Two supervisors are assigned at the outset of the course for each student's dissertation.
