Course description
Key facts
-The MSc in Health Promotion and Psychology emphasises the Institute's established strengths in areas such as chronic illness, sexual and reproductive health and work-related health. In addition, it is developing new interests in web-based health promotion and mental health promotion.
-Teaching within the Institute is informed by current research. We believe that research and teaching should be developed and delivered to help students and staff make a difference in the real world.
-In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, the Institute was awarded a 5 (with Nottingham University Business School).
-The wider School of Psychology was awarded 24/24 in the latest Teaching Quality Assessment, with a commendation for teaching.

You will be required to study the following core modules in semester one:

-Organisations, Stress and Health
-Promoting Health via the Internet
Semester two covers the core modules listed below:
-Personal and Professional Development
-Health Promotion, Culture and International Development
-Applied Research Methods
-Marketing Health Interventions
-Risk Assessment for Work Stress
-Theories and Methods of Behaviour Change
In addition, you will be able to choose one optional module – Environmental Psychology and Design or Health and Clinical Research Methods ( both offered in semester one) or Professional Issues in Research and Practice (offered in semester two).
Over the summer period towards the end of the course, you will undertake an empirical research project. This is your opportunity to complete a major piece of independent research in a topic related to health promotion under the supervision of a suitably experienced member of academic staff.
Course Structure
The MSc in Health Promotion and Psychology is delivered on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two years.
The course comprises 180 credits, split across 120 credits’ worth of core and optional taught modules and a 60-credit research project.
Part-time students on this course are taught alongside full-time students and the choice of modules (and therefore the timetable) is flexible and a matter for agreement between student and course director. In all cases, part-time students can access a wide range of teaching and learning facilities remotely via the student portal.
We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion and Psychology, which mirrors the taught component of the MSc but does not have a research project/dissertation requirement
