  This programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary politics in Europe. The programme has a twofold focus. It pursues  a pan-European approach to European politics, discussing both Eastern and Western Europe, and it provides extensive analysis of the evolution of the European Union. This dual focus allows you to develop and deepen your understanding of European integration and your knowledge of contemporary developments and reform debates in individual European states. The programme draws on the established expertise in European politics, comparative politics and international politics in the Department of Politics and it adopts a multidisciplinary approach to political analysis.
  
  This programme is designed for students who are planning to pursue a career in the civil service, in European institutions, non-state actors, journalism, higher education, or for students who simply wish to learn more about European politics.
  
  Content
  
  Compulsory courses
  
      * Institutions and policies of the European Union
      * Comparative European politics
      * Qualitative or quantitative research methods.
  
  Plus three choices from a range of specialist courses that will normally include:
  
      * Politics options: Contemporary Chinese politics; Democratisation in Central & Eastern Europe; EU in international politics and development; The foreign policy of the United States; Freedom of expression; Gender, rights and international law; Human rights & global politics; The internet & civil society; The political economy of Greater China; Political legitimacy: contemporary perspectives; The politics of gender in development; Social justice.
      * Central & East European Studies options: Changing state and society in Central Europe; Economic transformation in Central East Europe; Gender and identity in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia; Globalisation and the new security agenda in Central and Eastern Europe; Post-Soviet Russia: renegotiating global and local identities; Statehood and nationality in Central and Eastern Europe.
      * Economic & Social History options: European integration since 1945.
      * Law options: European human rights; International environmental law.
  
  Plus a dissertation of 12-15,000 words.
