MSc Energy and Power Engineering
Qualified electrical engineers are desperately needed by the power industry (manufacturers, project developers, independent consultants and network operators). There is also a severe shortage of power engineering expertise in other sectors, such as government bodies and finance organizations, where a detailed knowledge of energy supply and demand is increasingly important as societies develop and adapt to pressing environmental and economic constraints, dwindling reserves of fossil fuels and the emergence of new energy technologies.
This MSc course is aimed at students with general engineering/science backgrounds. During the course, you will gain the knowledge and skills required for a career in power engineering. For students who already possess a background in electrical and/or electronic engineering, this course is an opportunity to update your knowledge with the latest developments in renewable energy and smart grids.
The course consists of five core taught modules covering fundamental aspects of modern power systems and energy conversion technologies, including renewable energy generation and energy storage. Students will also choose three (from six) optional modules to study ‘non-electrical’ technologies that are crucial to the safe and reliable operation of modern power and energy systems. Alongside the taught modules, each student will carry out a supervised research project that will be of industrial significance. Students will also attend seminars on project planning/management, ethics, health & safety, report writing, library skills and career management, to help prepare them for the demands of the course and for future study or employment.
The course is delivered by a team of world-class research active academics in energy and power engineering, most of whom have industrial experience. This guarantees that the course material is always up-to-date and reflects real-world problems in industry and society. The individual projects (see below) will often come directly from the strategic industrial partners of the School, including Warwickshire Council, General Electric, Mott Macdonald and National Grid. This will give students invaluable experience of working with a variety of stakeholders and with industrial R&D teams.
