• Objectives
  -To develop students' understanding of criminological theories of offending and the extent of crime. -To provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of the application of criminological principles to law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. -To provide opportunities for students to study a range of criminological subjects and to write a substantial piece of academic written work. -To develop students' research skills and awareness of the range of methods and techniques used in criminological and related fields of social research. -To provide opportunities to develop practical data analysis techniques. -To raise awareness of the skills, knowledge and personal qualities needed in applied research settings.
• Entry requirements
  This award is aimed at people who want to develop their research skills towards the varied needs of real world settings and commissioners. Potential applicants might include recent graduates who want to develop their skills with a view to a research career, as well as people employed in criminal justice and related agencies that want to develop these skills for use within the workplace. Applied research is carried out in a range of institutions, including universities, government departments, local agencies and independent research organisations. The emphasis in applied research is upon developing skills to inform understanding or decisions made in a real world setting. Understanding and responding to the needs or specifications of the research employer or funding body is crucial - applied research has to be appropriately designed in order to answer the agreed research questions; it has to be delivered on time; and communicated clearly. The award has a criminological and criminal justice focus, whilst the data analysis skills developed through the programme are generic and relevant to a range of social or psychological research settings.
