Objectives
Electronic communication forms one of the fastest growing global activities, including mobile and satellite systems, data and computer networks and an ever-expanding range of applications. The MSc Communications Systems Engineering course prepares you to develop your career in these areas and provides a balanced mixture of: -Telecommunications -Data communications -Networks -Applications Throughout the course, the emphasis is on practical application and design rather than intensive analytical detail. The department is one of only five in the UK to have received a prestigious award from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under their RF Engineering Education Initiative. An alternative study mode, based on an extended project, is available to applicants who already have a significant specialist background in communications systems.

Entry requirements
Communication systems are vital to modern society. From land and mobile phones to radio and TV broadcasting, the Internet and satellite-based services, they allow us to communicate speech, video and data signals for business, personal life, entertainment and leisure. This course covers the design and analysis of modern telecommunications and data communication systems, whether mobile, fixed-terrestrial or satellite based.

Course description
You will study eight units on this course plus an individual project. Currently, the units are:
-Communication system principles
-Analysis of communication systems
-Data network principles
-Data network operation
-Microwave and wireless technology
-Mobile and satellite systems
-Communications security
-Project preparation
The course concludes with a four-month individual project in which you apply your knowledge to a significant in-depth piece of analysis or design. Your projects will be tailored to your individual interests and may take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.
