    Programme

Edinburgh has internationally recognised strengths in all the component disciplines of cognitive science, with research focusing on language and communication, robotics and learning, neural computation and philosophy of mind. Development of speech technologies is a particular Edinburgh strength.

The programme provides a thorough grounding in the study of human information processing, with a special emphasis on natural language, and acquaints students with the constituent disciplines of cognitive science (neural computation, formal logic, computational and theoretical linguistics, cognitive psychology), together with their methodologies and interconnections.

Students can choose from over 50 modules, which are grouped into subject areas or specialisms. The major specialisms for this degree are Natural Language and Language Engineering, Neural Computation and Neuroinformatics. There is a vast number of courses available within each specialist area and you can also choose courses from other areas that interest you. In fact, you will be very much encouraged to take advantage of this diversity and forge your own way in the field.

    How You Will Be Taught

The degree spans a full 12-month period, is modular in structure and consists of two semesters of lecture-based teaching, assessed by an examination in April. This is followed by a major individual project in a chosen area of specialisation and includes a written dissertation
