  • Objectives
    This programme will help you move into specialist posts in mental health, as well as in teaching and management. You will develop both your theory and practice, working with at least four clients. The programme is unique in the North East.

    Applicants have to be mental health practitioners working in clinical practice with people who have or are experiencing psychosis. You also need to be nominated and supported by your line manager and be working for one of the local NHS Trusts.

  • Course description
    During the programme you will use evidence-based approaches for psychosocial interventions for psychosis. As part of this, you will work intensively with at least four clients who have an enduring psychotic illness (including work with individuals and families).

    The programme focuses on integrated bio-psychosocial approaches to managing and treating severe mental illness. This responds to the needs of health and social care agencies; they want improved training in these approaches so that they can deliver better services.

    By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate high-level skills with in-depth knowledge. You will also benefit from regular, high quality supervision on the only postgraduate course of its kind in the North East of England.

    Course Content

    Stage 1
    Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) 120 credits

        * Understanding Severe Mental Illness
        * Psychological Interventions for Individuals with a Psychosis
        * Management of Severe Mental Ilness in Hospital and Community Settings

    Stage 2
    Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) 120 credits

        * Advanced Clinical Practice
        * Working with Families and Carers of Individuals with a Serious Mental Illness
        * Evidence-Based Practice

    Stage 3
    Masters (MSc) 120 credits

        * You will complete a project that demonstrates your competence in research methodology and practice.

    Teaching and Assessment

    Your assessment will be by both academic and clinical work submitted throughout the year and through a personal portfolio showing the development of your core competencies.

    The programme has strong links with local NHS Trusts who have made a commitment to enable their staff to fulfil the practice requirements of the course. The Trusts have undergone a process of organisational development to help them to facilitate the utilisation of the new skills and knowledge gained by their staff.
