Course description
Programme
The MSc by research in Cell Biology is offered in conjunction with the Wellcome Trust 4 Year PhD programme in Cell Biology. Five students will be accepted per year. For successful applicants, a stipend and all fees will be provided by the Wellcome Trust.
Learning Outcomes
Students will design, carry out and report on experimental investigations; gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art techniques in cell biology; collect, record and analyse data; review existing literature and prepare research reports. On completion of the programme, students will have detailed knowledge of three topics in cell biology and experience and expertise in a wide range of laboratory techniques.
How You Will Be Taught
Students will undertake three research projects in different research groups, supplemented by seminars and taught courses in relevant areas of cell biology. The taught courses will give the students skills that are important for a career in research, with particular emphasis on contemporary techniques in cell biology. In addition to technical training provided in active research laboratories, students have access to an extensive teaching programme in transferable skills, eg in scientific writing, project presentation and planning. Evaluation for the degree of MSc will be based on reports prepared by the students following each project and a longer research proposal that outlines their proposed project for the remainder of the PhD
