Course description
Programme content
This programme provides a strong training in many issues at the forefront of biotechnology. It integrates bioscience, biochemistry and biomedical science. Appropriately for this growing area, entrepreneurial skills and entrepreneurship are also developed in this programme, providing a unique approach to biotechnology.
The programme has a good balance of biology, biochemistry, biophysics and analytical chemistry and covers areas such as natural products, bioinformatics, biosensors, microbiology and aspects of drug design and manufacture. It is taught by specialists in bioscience, pharmaceuticals, and analytical and organic chemistry. The following taught modules are included:

-Drug Discovery, Design and Development
-Identification of Important Natural Products
-Biosensors and Analytical Techniques
-Structural Bioinformatics, Proteomics & Microarrays
-Separation Science
-Research Project
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and guided reading.
The supervised research project, which forms the subject of the dissertation, can be undertaken in industrial as well as in state-of-art University laboratories.
Assessment
Assessment is by a combination of written examinations, oral presentations, coursework, laboratory reports and submission of the dissertation.
Career progression
The programme is particularly suited to those who wish to pursue a career in biotechnological or pharmaceutical industries. However this programme will also equip students to pursue careers in hospital laboratories and research institutes, or to continue to a PhD programme
