  • Objectives
Predictive biology is the new frontier in biological science. From plant science to genetic disorders and global health problems, post-genomic technologies offer the ability to predict individual biological behaviour by identifying gene patterns and understanding how genes work in relation to each other. Post-genomic technology develops the work done on genome sequencing to predict a variety of biological responses, ranging from drought resistance in plants to predicting the clinical response of cancer patients to chemotherapy. The course has been designed to meet the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of the post-genomic technologies field and is suitable for those with experience or qualifications from a variety of backgrounds e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics or medical disciplines. The course aims to develop individuals with the technical skills and scientific knowledge required by the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. It is also beneficial to academic research laboratories investigating the future progression of predictive biology. This unique and collaborative Masters of Research (MRes) course is run jointly by The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University; both internationally renowned centres of excellence for the teaching and research of bioscience, biomedical and natural sciences.
  • Entry requirements
Entry requirements A BSc (Hons) degree, grade 2:2 or above is required in either mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science or a medical qualification. Students without a degree qualification, but with relevant industry experience, will be considered. Laboratory experience is required.

    Place of study
The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University are located in the thriving cosmopolitan city of Nottingham in the heart of England. You will study at Nottingham Trent University Clifton campus for the proteomics and transferable skills modules. The rest of the course will be based at the Sutton Bonington campus of The University of Nottingham.

Both campuses are located on attractive greenfield sites in the south of the city with frequent buses into the city centre.

    What do you study?
The MRes in Advanced Genomic and Proteomic Sciences will provide a comprehensive training package in theoretical biological modelling and its practical applications to state-of-the-art technologies. The course is divided into a taught element covering a period of 12 weeks.

On completion of the taught element the student will then undertake a nine-month research project in a field of study related to post-genomic technologies.

    Study routes
This innovative course will be delivered as part of tripartite collaboration between the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and industrial partners. There will be a taught element (60 Credit Points) and a laboratory based research project (120 Credit Points).

The projects will be based in research laboratories at either the University of Nottingham or Nottingham Trent University. Opportunities may also exist for students to undertake their research project in industry.

    Your future career
The technical skills and knowledge acquired from this course will be particularly applicable to industry, since it will investigate how technology can aid drug development and new product pipelines, thereby reducing the product development costs and anticipated time to market.

Both universities have an exemplary graduate employment record. As a Master of Research in Advanced Genomic and Proteomic Sciences, you will have gained an excellent scientific understanding, together with the technical skills required for industry, healthcare or research.

The extensive implications of post-genomic technologies will enable improvements in product evolution, aid the development of personalised medicine and provide new solutions to pollution or disease.

Your training will not only cover the technical side of post-genomic technologies but will introduce you to business management issues, as well as the ethical and societal implications of tomorrow’s technology today.

“This course addresses the critical need within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries for skilled personnel with strong practical training in bioinformatics and post-genomic technologies to help deal with real world problems”
Dr Chris Sutton, International Business manager, Shimadzu Corporations
