    Course overview

    The MSc course in medical ultrasound has a number of programme routes and includes exit points at postgraduate diploma and postgraduate certificate level. The course is primarily designed for registered healthcare professionals working in clinical practice within the United Kingdom. Overseas applicants will be considered on an individual basis, providing the entry requirements are fulfilled.

    Course content

    The programmes are modular consisting of core modules and/or optional modules to achieve 60 credits for the postgraduate certificate and 120 credits for the postgraduate diploma. For some programme routes all modules are compulsory, for other routes there is flexibility in module choice. This will be discussed at interview, if applicable.

    Students who achieve the award of postgraduate diploma can progress to MSc in their chosen route. Other options are available for the MSc APL route. Some modules can be completed for CPD purposes as a stand alone module (please contact a member of the ultrasound team for details)

    The modules have been designed to incorporate the scientific and clinical aspects of medical ultrasound.  This enables healthcare professionals with the appropriate qualifications and experience to develop a deep understanding of ultrasound and the clinical skills necessary to undertake a range of examinations within the healthcare environment.

    Module choice includes (* core module for any award):

        * Fundamental principles of Ultrasound Practice*
        * Gynaecology Ultrasound *
        * Obstetric Ultrasound
        * General Medical Ultrasound
        * Developments in Ultrasound Practice
        * Research Methods
        * Dissertation
        * Work Based Learning
        * Student Negotiated Module

    Teaching and assessment

    Students must obtain:

        * 60 Credits to receive the award of Post Graduate Certificate
        * 120 Credits to receive the award of Post Graduate Diploma
        * 180 Credits to receive the award of MSc

    The course also requires students to obtain an average of at least three days per week clinical experience within an approved ultrasound department. This must be arranged prior to applying for a place on the course.

    Module choices are limited for some of the postgraduate diploma and postgraduate certificate  routes, they include gynaecology ultrasound, fundamental principles of ultrasound practice, obstetrics ultrasound, general medical ultrasound, developments in ultrasound practice and research methods.

    The program involves some attendance at City University [day release], where students attend lectures, tutorials and seminars.  We have a well equipped clinical skills suite, which is used in the delivery of the ultrasound program. Student self-study, e-learning and work-based learning are essential parts of the course and students are required to obtain an average of three days per week clinical experience within a recognised ultrasound training department. There is a large amount of student led learning and it is expected that students will be motivated to complete additional self-directed work throughout the course. A good prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology is required for the programme.

    Modules are assessed by a range of different methods including poster presentations, objective structured examinations (OSE), written examinations, clinical portfolio and clinical assessments.
