Objectives
The professional development unit within the department offers a wide range of approved, accredited professional development courses targeted at the specific needs of post-registration healthcare professionals. The courses focus on clinical, diagnostic and technical skills development, as well as wider ranging courses such as professional teamwork development and leadership. The object is to facilitate the adoption of extended roles by health professionals and so enable them to ascend the ‘skills escalator’ in the NHS.

Entry requirements
Entry requirements A medical degree or degree in a healthcare subject with normally at least one year’s full-time equivalent practice post-registration. Health professionals who do not hold a degree, but who have a professional qualification in a health care discipline with normally at least three years’ experience post-registration will be considered.

Course description
Teaching and assessment methods
Most modules are delivered by short courses. All accredited modules are assessed by a variety of methods, including short answer papers, practical examinations, assignments and viva voce examinations. Students who satisfactorily complete four approved modules may be awarded the postgraduate certificate, completion of seven approved modules plus a module on research methods will lead to the award of a postgraduate diploma, which may rise to a master's degree by successful completion of a dissertation.
Duration and mode of study
Up to six years part-time, by completion of a chosen set of approved and accredited short course modules.
