Special features
We take good care of our students and have several tutors to oversee the process - from the Director of Undergraduate Studies in overall charge, Academic Tutors in all branches of the subject, a programme tutor for the F103 course, and a Personal Tutor for each student.
MChem Chemistry with Study in North America is a highly flexible degree involving courses from the School of Chemistry and a range of outside Schools. For full details of all our courses see our undergraduate syllabus on our web site.
The third year is spent studying chemistry in a North American University (USA or Canada). The course tutor will keep in contact throughout the year and you will undertake our core chemistry modules by distance learning over the web. Assessment involves the core modules, courses/practicals in the North American institution and a final report on the year out.
Course content for year 1
Core first-year topics include:
-Bonding in molecules
-Organic reaction mechanisms
-Natural product chemistry
-s, p and d block chemistry
-Thermodynamics
-Kinetic and quantum chemistry
-Mathematics
There is also the opportunity for you to study a subsidiary subject from outside Schools such as - Life Sciences (Biochemistry), Earth Sciences (Geology), Geography, Materials Science, Mathematics or Physics.
Course content for year 2
The second year continues developing the core and extends topics from first year, introducing new areas such as:
-Molecular spectroscopy
-Bonding and reactivity
-Surfaces and interfaces
-d and f block chemistry
-Molecular symmetry
-Metal-ligand bonding
-Polymer science
-Structure dermination
-Sterochemistry
-Heterocyclic chemistry
Plus additional units involving Biological and Computational Chemistry. You will also attend courses which cover a range of presentational, computer, and IT skills.
At the end of the second year you can elect whether to study for a three year BSc (Hons) Chemistry degree, a four year MChem Chemistry degree or the four year MChem Chemistry with Study in North America degree. However, eligibility for continuation on this MChem programme is assess at the end of each year and is at the discretion of the School of Chemistry. The assessment is based on your general performance and end of year mark.

The third year will be spent in a North American Institute. Currently available universities are:

Arrangements for partnerships with other North American institutions are in progress (we cannot guarantee a specific location). Your tutor will maintain contact with you during your placement year. During the year you will study Chemistry in lectures and laboratory classes, following the syllabus of the host university, and will be fully assess by the North American University in line with their own students. Assessment involves the core modules, courses/practical in the North American Institution and a final report on the year out.
Course content for year 4
In the fourth and final year, you carry out an extended project associated with one of the research groups in the School of Chemistry, take advanced Chemistry units and other specialist lectures chosen in consultation with your project supervisor.
Course fees: For entry in 2009, the tuition fees are "yet to be announced" per annum for home/EU students and "yet to be announced" per annum for international students.
