  • Objectives
    The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Education is recognised by the NMC for entry on the professional register as either a Practice Educator (working in an educational role primarily in nursing, midwifery or health visiting practice) or as a University Lecturer (typically employed within a university department). The opportunity exists for students to cross between these two main spheres of practice.
  • Entry requirements
    Successful candidates who have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education will be eligible to enter, with advanced standing, the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Education (part of the Postgraduate Advanced Health Practice Framework of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences) - leading to the NMC Recordable Teaching Qualification, provided that they fulfil the academic and professional entry requirements laid down by the NMC for such qualifications: an entry on an appropriate part(s) of the Nursing and Midwifery Professional Register: Registered Midwife (with NIP), Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, or first level Registered Nurse. completed a minimum of three years' full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in relevant professional practice during the last ten years acquired additional professional knowledge which must be relevant to the intended area of teaching/practice and at no less than first degree level.

    Programme

    The postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education is awarded to students who successfully achieve the following three modules:

    -Learning, Teaching and the Curriculum 30 credits (Level M)
    -Assessing and Evaluating 15 credits (Level M)
    -Teaching in Practice 15 credits (Level M)

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Education / Recordable Teaching Qualification is awarded on completion of 2 further 30 credit modules at level M. These modules are:

    -Research Designs in Health
    -Professional Education of Nurses and Midwives

    Successful students who achieve the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Education will be eligible to progress to read for a MSc in Professional Education through the submission of an educationally-orientated dissertation for which 60 level M credits are

    Please note that entry to the PGDip in Professional Education stage is dependant upon successful completion of the PGCert HE (or equivalent) run by the Academic Professional Development Unit of the University at the Leicester City Campus awarded.

    Teaching/assessment
    The course uses a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, visiting speakers, one-to-one supervision and self-directed study. Assessment in taught modules is by coursework assignments. Students wishing to progress to the MSc will be required to submit an educationally orientated research based dissertation.
