Objectives
This is an advanced course for tourism policymakers and practitioners, strategic planners in public and private organisations, and recent graduates with an interest in geography, economics, anthropology, environmental studies, business management, sociology or tourism development.
The course has been developed to facilitate effective and appropriate tourism policymaking, planning and management on a holistic and integrated basis. It aims to provide you with a full understanding of the role of international tourism in its global context, and an expertise in tourism systems and strategies. The course is supported by the work of the internationally renowned International Institute for Culture, Tourism and Development - one of the leading university research units of its type in the UK - and the Centre for Leisure and Tourism Studies.
Academic staff who contribute to the course have wide experience of the tourism industries in Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, East Asia, the Mediterranean, the Pacific and the UK.

Course description
Course structure
The course comprises five core modules, a free choice optional module, and a triple-module dissertation. The curriculum is supported by seminars and dissertation workshops. You are allocated an individual tutor to support your work on the dissertation.

Dissertation
Optional modules:
You may choose from a wide range of postgraduate modules offered at the University. Modules of particular interest to International Tourism Management students include:
-Environmental Management for Hotels, Resorts and Tourism
-Technological Innovation in Tourism and Hospitality
-Urban Tourism Management
You can also take an optional module entitled Business Work Placement Project, which involves spending at least 30 days with an organisation linked with tourism (for example, a tour operator, a tourism-related NGO, a national tourism board London office) to gain direct experience in a working environment within the industry. You can take it towards the end of the course, as an intensive full-time period during the summer months for example, or part-time over a longer period.
Assessment
Assessment of core modules is by means of coursework and through the dissertation.
Career opportunities
The course will be of benefit for those who wish to follow or develop careers within a wide range of tourism-related organisations. These include many professional opportunities in local, regional, national and international bodies concerned with tourism and tourism system. Commercial tourism organisations are important employers of our graduates as are the various public sector bodies that regulate and promote the tourism industry. Graduates may also be able to progress to MPhil/PhD research within London Metropolitan University.
