Course description
The MA is currently the UK’s only postgraduate distance learning course in technical communication.
It provides an in depth examination of the role of the technical communicator in a variety of industrial and corporate contexts. You learn about the theory of technical communication and consider practical approaches to technical writing.
You study part-time by distance learning. The course balances an academic, research-led approach with a review of technical communication practices.
You consider every step of the design cycle for printed documents such as reports, procedures and instructions and for online documents such as online help, multimedia applications, and websites.
All industries and organisations need skilled technical communicators. This course is ideal to prepare or develop professional communication skills through reflective practice.
There is no obligation to complete the three year programme. You register for one year at a time and at the end of each year decide whether to continue.
Our course is well-regarded nationally and internationally. In 2001, the Journal of Business and Communication (an American publication) reviewed MA courses in TechnicalTechnical Communication and rated ours as very impressive.
Associated careers
The course equips existing technical communicators with enhanced, marketable expertise, and enables graduates to enter the field with a good grounding.
There may be opportunities for registration for MPhil/PhD within our Cultural Research Institute.
