Objectives
To enhance understanding of contemporary educational issues, both national and international, for teachers in primary, secondary and post-compulsory education; to develop participants’ ability to reflect on theory in the areas of teaching and learning and use it as the basis for understanding and improving practice; to develop participants’ ability to design and undertake small scale research.

Entry requirements
Normally a good honours degree or an advanced diploma in education, and preferably at least one year teaching or equivalent educational experience.

Course modules
Core modules:
-Research Methods
-Contemporary Issues in Education
Option modules (two from the following):
-Teaching and Learning (Primary Education)
-Teaching and Learning (Secondary Education)
-Inclusive Education
-Understanding Behaviour
-Education for Citizenship
-ICT and Education
Students may also take one option module from the Leadership and Management or Applied Linguistics programmes.
Teaching and assessment methods
Students attend weekly lectures and seminars for a total of 150 hours. Each module is assessed by a 4-5,000 word assignment. Core modules are additionally assessed by a presentation of work in progress. A 15-20,000 word dissertation is also required, based on supervised research related to an area covered by one or more modules studied.
