Objectives
The MA in Chinese Studies is designed to help you re-skill yourself to take advantage of these opportunities. This degree complements its sister degrees, the MSc in Chinese Business and International Relations and MSc in Chinese Language, Business, and International Relations, which are targeted to economics/business or politics/international relations graduates, by offering a broader focus, allowing graduates with arts degrees or degrees in science or other disciplines to gain expertise on China. It will allow you to develop an ability to use the Chinese language, enabling you to achieve a practical competence in spoken Mandarin and a vocabulary of around 1500 Chinese characters. It will also provide a broad range of knowledge about modern and contemporary China's culture, history and politics. At the same time, it will focus on developing your research skills through a series of student-directed seminars and research methodology modules. This will equip you for work in a wide variety of occupations, spanning the public service, non-government organizations, business and cultural bodies.

Entry requirements
Entry requirements At least 2:1 honours degree, or overseas equivalent. If you have a lower class of degree plus relevant professional experience or other relevant qualifications, please contact the School's graduate admissions tutor or distance learning admissions tutor, as appropriate. Our standard English requirements for overseas students are: IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6 in each component) TOEFL 600 (paper test) or TOEFL 250 (computer test) with 5.0 in TWE.

1.(a) Core modules
-Chinese Language I (30 credits)
-Chinese Language II (30 credits)
-Practical Chinese for Research (10 credits)
(b) units to the value of thirty credits from either (i) or (ii)
(i)
-State and Economy in Contemporary China (10 credits)
-Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture (20 credits)
(ii)
-Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture (10 credits)
-State and Economy in Contemporary China (20 credits)
(c) a unit to the value of twenty credits from the following:
-Research Issues in Chinese Culture and Identity (20 credits)
-Research Issues in Chinese Politics and Modernity (20 credits)
(d) the following
-Dissertation (60 credits)
With the approval of the Head of Department a candidate may replace one or more units listed at 1(b) above with other relevant postgraduate units.
2. A candidate who has been awarded one hundred and twenty credits in respect of units listed at 1(a), (b), (c) and (d) above shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Chinese Studies.
3. A candidate who has been awarded sixty credits in respect of units listed at 1(a), (b), (c) and (d) above shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese Studies.
