Course description
The flexibility of the degree structure allows the student to follow their interests and deepen specialist knowledge. It will help acquire invaluable transferable skills such as communicating on an intercultural level, using sources, evaluating evidence and problem solving while situating the language being studied in an intercultural context.
Students select one language option in their first year and follow this throughout their degree.
Level 1
-One Language option chosen from: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish or English (English for Academic Purposes) 5 (for students whose first language is not English)

-One option chosen from one of three study areas:
-Language and Linguistics: Foundations of Linguistics; Foundations of Sound and Meaning
-History and Politics: Understanding Cultural Difference; Governance and Citizenship in Modern Britain; Introducing Politics: Ideas, Concepts and Practices; The Eighteenth Century: State, Society and Empire; Victorian and Edwardian Britain; War, Culture and Society
-Media and Film Studies: Introduction to Media, Culture and Communication; Reading Film; Film and American Society 1930-1980; Living in the City
-One option chosen from another discipline
Level 2
-Language Option
-Migration, Mobility and Exile
-Two options chosen from one of three study areas:
-Language and Linguistics: Applied Linguistics; Linguistic Content and Interpretation; Additional Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish or English (English for Academic Purposes) 6 or 7)
Students choose EITHER one Linguistics course and one language course OR two Linguistic courses
-History and Politics: Germany, Europe and the World, 1871-1945; Globalisation, Culture and Development; Political Systems: American and Russian Politics; Politics of European Integration; Culture and Society in the Twentieth Century
-Media and Film Studies: Dream Factory: The Motion Picture Industry and American Society in the Twentieth Century; Environment, Politics and the Mass Media
Level 3

-History and Politics: Asylum-seeking, Racism and Gypsies in Contemporary Europe; International Organisations: Politics and Policy Making; Political Protest and the State in Britain; Rise and Fall or Apartheid South Africa; The Cold War; The Empire Strikes Back? Race, Immigration and National Identity in Twentieth Century Britain; The French Revolution
-Media and Film Studies: Film, Fantasy and Identity; Working for Hollywood; The New Media Environment
