Objectives
This course will also support and prepare middle managers, leading teachers, high-level teaching assistants (if appropriately qualified or through AP(E)L – see the Entry requirements section) and learning support assistants. As part of our special educational needs programme, we also offer courses specialising in autism and emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Entry requirements
If you are a special educational needs co-ordinator or a mainstream classroom teacher working with children with special educational needs, this course is ideal. It will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of specific learning disabilities exhibited by students.

Course description
What will you study?
You will explore the learning needs of students with special educational needs through engagement with a number of important topics, such as accessibility of the curriculum; developmental, social and cultural issues related to inclusive education; supporting children, parents and colleagues in the teaching and learning process; providing opportunities for personal achievement and self-esteem; raising expectations of success, independence and self-management of learning; critical appreciation and use of teaching and learning styles; evaluation of cognitive styles and learning strategies; and assessment of learning and need.
At PgDip and MA level, you will look at some of the wider issues facing schools and the management of special education needs within the mainstream sector. In Phase 3 of the course, you will have the opportunity to carry out personal research and development activities in schools.
