• Objectives
  This degree will provide you with the advanced conceptual, theoretical and technical skills necessary for PhD research in history. The degree critically examines problems of historical theory and practice, with emphasis on debates around topics such as: narrative and history; objectivity and relativism in history; causation; history and other disciplines; the new cultural history; postmodernism; Marxist historiography; and the Annales School.

  -Research Skills and Methods in History
  -Computing for Historians.
  
  The latter two core courses provide practical training in the basic skills of historical research, including: formulating a thesis; storing and managing information; the use of archives; and advanced computer skills.

  Solely by seminar, giving you the fullest possible opportunity to develop your own ideas.
  
  Assessment
  Practical core and option module assessment. Each option is assessed by a single 5000-word essay; the two practical core courses are examined by shorter exercises. Dissertation of 15,000 words.
