Entry requirements
You should: * have 1 A Level at grade C or above in a science subject or 2 A Levels pass in relevant subjects (e.g. English Language and literature, Psychology, Sociology, Sports Science, Physical Education, Business Studies, Maths, History or Geography) plus passes in 4 other subjects at GCSE grade C or above (including English and Maths) or * have BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science (Beauty Therapy), NVQ level 3, or AVCE double award in a related subject plus passes in 4 GCSEs grade C or above (including English and Maths) or * have equivalent qualifications or professional experience * have IELTS 5.5 or equivalent if you are an International/EU students and English is not your first language
Course description
FdA Beauty Therapy and Health Studies
Programme
The course covers therapeutic studies, science and management in an integrated programme of study over two years. You will experience a range of beauty therapy techniques including facial, body, spa, cosmetic treatments, and hair removal technology. You will research a variety of products, treatments and technologies currently used in the industry to enable you to examine, analyse and evaluate new developments.
Work based projects and simulated salon experience will allow you to learn all about current professional practice. Science is integrated within the course through practical aspects and provides an in depth academic background for the study of beauty, health and spa therapies, drawing on your research and analytical skills.
You will develop research techniques, critical and analytic skills, an understanding of relevant academic literature, and the ablity to communicate effectively in an academic style. Introduction to Historical and Cultural studies and the selection of electives in the second year, will enage and encourage you to debate concerns revolving around fashion and beauty
The course is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of human physiology, anatomy, chemistry, physics, dermatology, cosmetic science, and the effects of obesity and exercise on health and well being. Emphasis is also given to the development of a sound understanding of the business and marketing strategies currently operating in the beauty, spa and health industries. An integrated programme of marketing, finance, resource management and information technology will prepare you to enter the industry either as a practitioner, trainee or assistant manager.
