Course description
Introduction
This advanced course of study will offer an academic progression route for graduates in electrical and electronic engineering, control systems, computer science or related disciplines. The focal point of the course will be the fast-growing and challenging area of embedded systems.
This is a rapidly expanding area of modern technology, and its impact and potential are increasingly evident in devices used in commerce and industry. There are expanding applications with enhanced features for end users in industry, instrumentation, health care, services, entertainment, science and robotics. The course will offer a range of skills and knowledge of immediate relevance to industry.
Although the primary focus of the curriculum is on the needs of recent graduates, the course is also suitable for more experienced engineers, who require a postgraduate programme to enhance their technical and managerial education. The industrial relevance of the course curriculum is of prime importance. The course offers some flexibility in the subjects studied whilst retaining coherence.
You are able to select options in technical and management subjects and may also select master's level modules from any postgraduate scheme within the University, provided that the module outcomes are relevant to the role of an engineer or technical manager.
Course Structure
You may complete the course in one year by full-time attendance. In exceptional circumstances we can extend it over a period of part-time study to suit students and their employers. The postgraduate diploma (PgDip) and MSc both require the satisfactory completion of 105 credits, forming the taught part of the course. In addition, the MSc requires the satisfactory completion of a major industry-based project worth
75 credits.
All modules are worth 15 credits each unless noted otherwise and include:
Compulsory modules:
Embedded Systems (recommended)
Embedded Controllers
Option modules:
-Digital Design (recommended)
-Virtual Instrumentation (recommended)
-Real-Time Systems (recommended)
-Project Management
-Software Development Methods
-Research Project
Random Signal Analysis
Total Quality Engineering
Personal Development
Human Computer Interaction
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities for embedded systems engineers are numerous and are rapidly expanding into a variety of large and small organisations. Master's graduates are equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical design skills to open up new career opportunities and be valuable assets to their employers.
