  • Entry requirements
    You need to be at least 16,and you may have obtained a number of GCSE grades at D - G, or you may have obtained some qualifications at Entry Level . You need to be motivated to follow a vocationally related science course. Acceptance onto the course will also depend on your demonstrating an acceptable level of competence in numeracy and English language. Students who have no formal qualification in these subjects will be assessed for entry by means of written tests in English and Maths. Additional support classes will recommended for those students who meet the entry criteria but need to improve their language or numeracy skills during the course. The Certificate is more appropriate for mature students.
  • Course description
    This is a full time Level 1 Applied Science qualification.
    It provides a good foundation in science and a progression route into the Applied Science course at Level 2, for which the Level 1 Diploma at Merit grade is required, or into Level 2 courses in Health and Social Care or Sport

    One year, daytime

    What does it include?

    The B.TEC Introductory Diploma/Certificate is composed of individually assessed units.   The Diploma is composed of:
    3 Core Vocational Units (Certificate 2 units)
    2 Personal skills Units (Certificate 1 unit)
    5 Science Units: Health and Disease, Useful Chemical Products, Living Systems, Energy and Space, Making things Work in Science      (Certificate 3 units)

    The units are assessed internally by means of assignments which are often based on laboratory practical work, and assessment tests. Two of the units are assessed using an externally set assignment.  All assignments are externally  moderated by Edexcel.

    Each unit is individually graded at pass, merit or distinction, and each unit must be passed to achieve the Diploma. The overall grade of the Diploma is based on the grade of the best two unit results .Personal Skills units can only achieve a pass grade.

    What else will I study ?
    Key skills in Application of Number, Communication  and IT are studied by all Diploma students, and are assessed by an assignment plus an external test.
    Certificate students will take Communication key skills.
