  What is the course about?
  
  A survey of western art from the Gothic to the Victorian Age focusing on different styles and periods. Works of art are discussed in class and placed in a historical and cultural context.
  
  What topics will we cover?
  
  Different styles and periods will be presented in the following chronological order: pre-Renaissance - Gothic & Byzantine traditions; the Renaissance in Italy; the Renaissance in northern Europe; High Renaissance and Mannerism; Baroque and Rococo; Dutch art from the Golden Age; Neo-Classicism; Romanticism and Realism.
  
  Each class will feature a selection of key paintings, sculpture and architecture and the major artists associated with that week's style.
  
  By the end of this course you should be able to:
  
  - An ability to place the work of a number of artists in their stylistic periods
  - A broad understanding of the historical and cultural contexts in which the artists discussed were working
  - Increased confidence in using style labels and art terms
  
  What level is the course?
  
  The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
  
  How will I be taught?
  
  Slide presentation by the tutor with the opportunity for group discussion at the end. There will also be some pairs and small group activities. The afternoon class includes a guided visit to the National Gallery ? meet at the Sainsbury Wing entrance.
  
  Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
  
  No.
  
  You are advised to bring a notebook to the classes.
  
  You may also like to purchase a couple of books suggested on handouts during the course and are also encouraged to use the City Lit library and explore recommended sites on the internet.
  
  What feedback will I get?
  
  Your tutor will give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
  
  Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
  
  Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
