Course description
What is the course about?
This is a hands-on class which covers all the making techniques including glazing and simple glaze mixing. It is open to the complete beginner and to the more advanced and experienced student. You will be able to develop a visual and practical awareness and increase your overall perception of pottery and ceramics. This is based on learning all the basic skills required in making ceramics and applying the discipline in developing a creative and personal approach.
What topics will we cover?
You will be taught the range of making skills week by week, so that you will have an understanding of the variety of techniques that go towards making ceramics. A learning of the basic making skills, decorative process involving slip and glazes will also be covered, so at the end of the introductory period you should have the knowledge and skills to work independently, thus giving you an opportunity to work in a more personal way.
Everyone will be involved in a practical running of the workshop as part of the departments policy of taking students, step by step, through as many ceramic processes as are appropriate to the course and with a concern for health and safety.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- A Level of skill and technique in all the making processes.
- The ability to design and make pots from a personal concept.
- An understanding of the decorative and finishing aspects of glazes.
- Work with clay and glaze confidently and creatively.
What level is the course?
The course is open to anybody with an interest in working with clay and no previous experience is necessary.
How will I be taught?
Group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, but mainly learning by doing.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
Some tools are available for purchase from the department. Advice will be given by the tutor during the course. All work has to be paid for prior to being fired (1 per 500g).
Students will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow the health and safety guidelines.
What feedback will I get?
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
