Duration and Levels:
AS: One year - Day
AS & A2 Levels: Two years - AS in year 1, leading to A2 in Year 2.
Mode: Full-time
NB: Daytime programmes of study are available on a full-time basis only.
What does the A/S Level include?
This course comprises the submission of a coursework folder of two pieces of work:
1) An analytical comparison of two texts (one written, one multimodal e.g. email, advert, website), and
Adaptive writing plus commentary (where you adapt one of the texts from part 1 into a new text (with a different audience or purpose); plus
2) Two exam units: ‘Speech and Children’ and ‘Speech Varieties and Social Groups’
What does the A2 include?
At A2 you will study two units:
1) ‘Language and the Media’ where you be required to submit a coursework folder of 3,000 words, and
2) An examined unit which focuses on the study of texts in three modes: spoken, written, and multimodal. You will explore written and spoken language use in a variety of different social and cultural contexts, gaining insights into meaning and interpretation e.g. Language, Power and Identity and The Language of Popular Texts
What type of assessment is used?
At AS there is one coursework unit and one written paper and the same at A2. The AS paper is taken at the end of the first year and A2 exams are taken at the end of the second year.
What do I need to get onto the Course?
You will need a minimum of grade B in GCSE English Language
AND
To study 3 AS levels, you need to have 4 other GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).
To study 4 AS levels, you need to have 5 other GCSEs grade A-C (obtained in one sitting).
What else can I study?
There are many other AS Level subject which combine well with this subject, including other arts/humanities/social science subjects such as History, Sociology, Film Studies, Psychology, Media studies or Theatre Studies.
