• Objectives
  Our teaching and learning provision was rated as excellent during the last Quality Assurance Assessment (QAA) ensuring that students coming to Leicester learn in an enriching educational environment. The degree aims to provide a broad knowledge of molecular, cellular and systems aspects of medical sciences and to provide students with an understanding of experimental science and problem solving. In 2005 the School was awarded status of a Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning. The School was also ranked in the top 10 in the 2005 and 2006 National Student Surveys.
• Entry requirements
  Entry Requirements * A/AS Levels: Three A levels, normally required including Biology and either Chemistry or Physics or Maths or another relevant science. Two AS levels considered in place of one A level. General Studies not accepted. Typical offers: equivalent UCAS Tariff points (300-360) may be offered. * GCSE: English Language and Mathematics, if not held at A/AS level.Biology and Physics, if not held at A/AS level, either single subjects or part of a Dual Award Integrated Science. * Access to HE courses: Pass, with at least the requisite credits at level 3. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 70% overall. * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 32-34 points. * Leicestershire Progression Accord: 270-330 points as above plus full Accord credits. * BTEC Nationals: Full Diploma with DDM (equivalent to 320 UCAS Tariff points), plus any subject/GCSE requirements. * Other qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed. * Mature students welcomed: Alternative qualifications considered. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications strictly compatible with our degree structure. * Interviews are not normally required. All applicants receiving offers will be invited to visit the Department. * This degree is not available on a part time basis.

  First Year
  
  Modules in Biochemistry, Genetics, Physiology, Cell and Tissue Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Key Skills from the first year of the Medical and Biological Sciences curriculum.
  
  Second Year
  
  Six modules from a large number offered by departments within the Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences, including two compulsory Physiology/Pharmacology modules, a disease-based module, a compulsory key skills module and a choice of two other modules from within the disciplines of Biochemistry, Genetics, Animal Sciences and Microbiology.
  
  Final Year
  
  Students take a total of four modules which includes Understanding Disease (compulsory), and at least two of: Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, Cellular Physiology of the Cardiovascular System, and Brain and Behaviour. One non-physiology module may be taken from the large range of modules offered within the Biological Sciences degree programme. A compulsory final year project is also taken.
