BSc Mathematics
Programme
First Year
The core modules covering two thirds of the course are Proof and Number Systems; Methods of Applied Mathematics 1 – vectors, differential equations, multivariate calculus; Newtonian Dynamics; Probability; Real Analysis; Linear Algebra. These courses include training in the use of mathematical software – Maple, and Matlab. The optional third of the course could include the modules Mathematical Modelling; Pure Mathematics at Work; Chaos and Fractals; Geometry of the Plane; or a supplementary subject offered elsewhere in the university, including Computer Science. For those students who will be studying in Europe, appropriate language tuition is provided in your first and second years.
Second Year
The modules available build upon those of the first year: there are further courses in Real Analysis, and Linear Algebra, as well as courses in Abstract Analysis, and Abstract Algebra. Courses in Statistics build upon the Probability of the first year, whilst the applied mathematics covers Scientific Computing; Differential Equations and Dynamics; Methods of Applied Mathematics 2 – vector calculus, fluid mechanics, and waves. All students take a module (Investigations in Mathematics) that focuses on the communication of mathematical ideas, and involves report writing and a presentation. Students on the BA degree may take a second year of a language course.
If you take the USA degree you will spend your second year at Kent State University, Ohio taking an approved selection of their courses.
Third Year
In the third and fourth year modules, the syllabuses are designed to bring you to an understanding of some of the current research areas in mathematics. The modules on offer tend to reflect the current research being undertaken at Leicester. For example Topology; Abstract Algebra; Lie Algebras; Differential Geometry; Relativity and Electromagnetism; History of Mathematics; Ordinary Differential Equations; Generalized Linear Models; Methods of Molecular Simulation; Wavelets and Signal Processing; Finite Element Methods for Partial Differential Equations.
If you take the Europe degree your third year of study will be spent at a European university and you will return to Leicester to complete the third year of our degree in your fourth year of study.
