Objectives
Genetics and microbiology are complementary aspects of modern biology: genetics is the study of heredity and variation in all organisms, from bacteria to humans, and microbiology is the study of microbes (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses). Because of their ease of culture and relative simplicity, microbes have been extensively used for working out the molecular details of heredity, and continue to be the organisms of choice for the detailed investigation of a wide range of genetic mechanisms. Conversely the understanding of the genetics of microbes is key to controlling diseases that they can cause.
