• Objectives
  The first year of the course provides much of the necessary scientific background required for an understanding of the normal eye, together with an introduction to optics (the behaviour of light) and orthoptics. The second and third year of the course develops upon this, but also considers ocular abnormalities and disease states. You will study professionally-related topics such as medical ethics and the organisation and structure of the National Health Service. The department is engaged in both clinical and non-clinical research and in your final year you will undertake a research project on a topic of your choice. Clinical work is an important part of the course. The clinical aspects are introduced in the first year and are further developed in the second and third years. The course includes a total of 31 weeks of clinical placement and the academic year is longer to allow for this. Clinical placements are arranged in orthoptic departments across the country. The variety of hospitals, community clinics, child development centres and schools for children with special needs used over the three years ensures that your experience is comprehensive, providing a sound clinical base from which graduates can progress. The third year includes a two-week clinical elective period during which you can spend time in an orthoptic department of your choice. Mature students: Alternative qualifications will be considered. Criminal Records Bureau: All applicants for entry to undergraduate courses in Orthoptics are required to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
• Entry requirements
  Entry requirements GCE/VCE A Levels - BBB Two GCE A Levels plus two GCE AS Levels - BB+AB Scottish Highers - AABB (may require Advanced Highers in science) Irish Leaving Cert. - ABBBB International Baccalaureate - 32 points Core Requirements - Grade C in GCSE English, Maths and another science. GCE A Level Biology is preferred but not essential. A mix of arts/science subjects is welcome.

  Our students usually select from a range of compulsory and optional modules to add up to 120 credits.
