Objectives
This course will not only prepare you for a career in retail management, it will also encourage you to profit from your own creative thinking in a wider context. Emphasis is placed on the visual aspects of communicating ideas, products and services to customers. Themes include consumerism, change, brand marketing and internet communication.
Year one of the course concentrates on retail operations and the retail environment. In year two you will learn and develop management functions and skills that are required at store management and in head office positions. In year three you will explore strategic issues by investigating the future of the retail industry and the change factors that may lead to new business practices.

Entry requirements
Applicants with some, or all of the following achievements will be considered for admission to the programme:
* two or more 'A' Level passes with at least 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above
* an Edexcel GNVQ at Advanced Level (or equivalent) at Merit Level
* Access Certificate recognised by the National Open College Network with at least 16 (48) credits at level 3
* have developed a successful career in a relevant area to a level that the team, through a process of accreditation of prior and experiential learning (APeL) considers being the equivalent of academic development

Programme
Year One provides an introduction to the retail industry by examining Retail Operations & Logistics and Retail Environments. The value of information in competitive retail organisations is studied in Managing Information. This specifically looks at the internet as a crucial component in communicating retail brand. Key marketing themes are introduced in Marketing Concepts. Also included is the influence that art, design and culture have on the development of the retail offer.
Year Two key principles of effective enterprise management are explored in Buyer Behaviour and Human Resources. Course electives provide an opportunity to study a specialist area such as Fashion Retailing, Food Retailing or the Legal Aspects of Retailing. Also studied is Financial Resource Management for Buyers and in the third term there is a period of work based learning in a related organisation.
Year Three undertakes the analysis and evaluation of strategic planning and management of change in the retail industry through the subjects Strategic Management, Global Retailing and Buying & Merchandising. The creative aspects of retail strategies is studied through Futures & Innovation. Finally the final project provides an opportunity for major research in the specialist area of your choice.
