    This course offers you the opportunity to combine studies in French and German language, literature and culture. You will normally devote half your time to each discipline. Alongside core language modules, you may select additional modules in a variety of topics including literature, linguistics, history, politics, culture and film.

    Programme

    Year one

    In French, you will receive a firm grounding in the structures of the language through the core language module and pursue a choice of introductory studies in reading French texts, contemporary France, French history or linguistics. In German, the first-year core language course develops the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. In addition, you will take modules in literature, history, politics and society and may opt for modules in linguistics.

    Year two

    In French and German, your language studies will be consolidated and developed to prepare you for the year abroad. You will study a choice of modules in French aimed at developing your knowledge in some or all of the fields mentioned in the course description. In German, you will take modules in literature, history, politics and society. There is additionally a wide choice of modules in German culture, linguistics and media, and Dutch is normally available.

    Year three

    Spent abroad, in a French-speaking and a German-speaking country, either studying at a higher education institution, as an English language assistant, or on a work placement.

    Year four

    You will perfect your command of both languages and their use in increasingly sophisticated contexts and study optional modules drawn from a list covering a wide range of topics in the fields mentioned in the course description. You may also choose to write a dissertation in German.
