Course Structure
Foundation Level
Your language studies form the basis of higher level work in later years. Year 1 modules introduce theories of human communication and descriptive methods in English Language. At the end of the first year, you will have established the foundations for advanced degree-level study, by acquiring an appropriate range of skills and abilities.
Intermediate Level
You will study core modules in language including Sociolinguistics and can choose language modules covering topics such as Child Language Acquisition and Conversation Analysis, Stylistics of Narrative, Poetry or Dramatic Texts. For your Modern Language strand you will be able to demonstrate that you have consolidated and improved upon your performance at foundation level by communicating, orally, and in writing, with precision and clarity and in a manner appropriate to a given task and a given audience. Overall, you will have learnt to work independently and efficiently through the setting of priorities and the organisation of reading, research and the preparation of work.
Honours level
You will choose two aspects of linguistics from a wide range of modules including Language and Power, metaphor, Pragmatics, Bilingualism and The Language of Humour.. By the end ofhonours level study, you will have developed the ability to operate at a high level in both English Language and the foreign language studied. You will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of English, and the contemporary socio-economic and cultural contexts of the countries whose language you have studied.
