Working with Children in Schools or Pre-schools Certificate Level 2 Course
Entry requirementsYou will need to be at least 19 years of age and have an interest in working with children. No specific qualifications are required, but you will be assessed for literacy and understanding of childcare as part of the selection process, to ensure that you are working at the appropriate level. Literacy at Level 1 or above is needed. Criminal Record Bureau checks are required.

Course description
Content details
The common course for this programme is the Certificate in Pre-school Practice, which covers supporting play and learning, children's development, providing safe and secure environments and teamwork. Additionally, the School Pathway includes the CACHE Level 2 Certificate for Teaching Assistants, thus covering the older ages and enabling learners to seek work in a range of childcare and early years' settings. Learners on the Early Years Pathway also take the Promoting Children's Development through Creative Activities course. This course introduces a range of craft based activities, useful for work in any setting, but especially in early years.
How is the course taught
You have a mixture of group activities, discussions, some lectures and practical activities. You spend a minimum of 120 hours in a work experience placement to enable learners to link theory to practice.
Assessment
Your assessment is entirely through coursework assignments. Learners on the School Pathway have 6 assignments and on the Early Years Pathway there are 4, plus a portfolio for Creative Activities.
Course leads to
If you obtain an overall Merit/Distinction and Literacy Level 2, you can apply to the Level 3 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education. You could gain employment in a range of careers e.g. nursery, schools, or early years centres.
