Water Science Master in Science by Research

  • Objectives (a) Provide students with substantive knowledge and understanding of a variety of methods, techniques and approaches that support research into Water Science (b) Allow and encourage students to pursue a sustained programme of original research in an appropriate field of enquiry (c) Develop a range of professional competencies and personal transferable skills that will enable students to pursue a variety of employment opportunities or to continue with more advanced research programmes.
  • Entry requirements Successful applicants must normally hold at least a lower second Honours degree in a related subject. Applicants with a lower class of degree and/or from outside of these areas will be considered individually and are usually interviewed prior to being offered a place. Applicants without a first degree, but who have relevant work experience, are also considered on an individual basis.
  • Academic title Water Science Master in Science by Research
  • Course description Water is used as a resource for potable supplies, industry, leisure and amenity leading to diverse impacts on both rural and built environments. Low flows, flooding, contamination and lowered biodiversity are a few of the issues mitigated against by both engineering (hard and soft) and legislative approaches. This course is designed to equip students with the advanced research skills required to support a substantive piece of original research in a chosen aspect of Water Science.

    Future prospects

The Masters by Research programme in Water Science will appeal to those students who have an interest in the provision of water as a resource for diverse uses and will equip graduates to take up research/consultancy positions with appropriate private/government agencies (eg EA, ADAS, DEFRA). The programme will also prepare students contemplating progress to MPhil and/or PhD training programmes.

    Course content

Potential research projects relevant to the programme include:

continuous monitoring of an individual SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) emplacement, or SUDS train; analysis of flood frequency allied to urban and/or industrial development; impact of legislation on water quality e.g. the EU Nitrates Directive on groundwater quality in a specific aquifer, the EU Habitats Directive on the biodiversity of a chosen habitat or RQO (River Quality Objectives) for fish populations of a given river reach.

    Additional support for international students

Coventry University takes pride in the culture and richness that its international students bring to campus life. Currently over 2,000 international students from some 90 countries are pursuing programmes of study here, with a growing amount enrolling on postgraduate courses. A recent report ranked the University highly in terms of international student numbers, recognising our reputation as a leading international institution.

To meet the needs of this rapidly growing community within the University's student population, our International Office is on hand to provide assistance on all relevant matters such as visas and immigration.
